Hervey, Walter (d. in or after 1276), mayor of London, rose from obscure origins to become a notoriously divisive figure in thirteenth-century London. Such was his popularity among the London commoners that at the mayoral election of 1272 huge crowds chased the aldermen of London to Westminster, where their shouts of ‘we are the commune of the city, and the election of the mayor belongs to us, and we definitely want Walter Hervey, whom we have elected, to be mayor’, even disturbed King Henry III on his deathbed. But Hervey was also despised by many among London’s elite and his enemies finally emerged victorious in 1274, banning Hervey from holding municipal office for life.
